The Chant West Super Fund Awards recognise the best super and pension funds in Australia, and the focus of this year’s awards has been on member outcomes, taking the lead from APRA’s new outcomes assessment model.

Chant West’s Head of Research Ian Fryer said: “The secret of success for both super funds and for individuals working in those funds is to pursue member best interest in a passionate and uncompromising way.

“This industry and we as individuals will only succeed if we fulfil our mandate to do what is best for members and to direct all our energies to that goal.”

In speaking about Sunsuper, Mr Fryer said the fund confidently ticked all the boxes for achieving outcomes for members.

“It’s a strong all-round fund,” he said.

“Sunsuper spends much of its energy in investments on unlisted assets as it believes this is where it can create most value for members. It has a sophisticated program of investments in private equity, property and infrastructure.

“Performance over the last five years has been strong – consistently top quartile.

“And its use of member data to identify and promote each member’s next best action consistently across multiple channels is more developed than any other fund. Its big investment in this area has yielded impressive results in terms of engagement and members taking positive action. All its campaigns are now automated which has meant that it can focus its energies on producing engaging content for each communication.”

Mr Fryer said the winner of the Pension Fund of the Year, UniSuper, paid around $800 million in pensions each year to 23,000 pension members.

“Importantly, the fund’s investment options are managed by a very experienced team and have performed well over many years. It has been one of our top-rated funds for investments for many years.

“UniSuper’s advice offering is well-established, with 42 advisers providing face-to-face comprehensive advice services, both strategic advice and ongoing. It has addressed the need for aged care advice, with one aged-care qualified adviser in each office and a partnership with a third party aged care advice provider.

About 50% of new pension members receive comprehensive advice from UniSuper at or near retirement and about 30% receive ongoing advice through the fund’s review service.  It also has In Retirement seminars available to pension members in all capital cities which are attended by about 10% of all pension members each year.”

Chant West Holdings Limited CEO Brendan Burwood congratulated all the winners on the night.

“The focus of this year's awards is member outcomes,” Mr Burwood said. “The awards provide an opportunity to drive excellence and innovation by highlighting who is achieving better member outcomes for their members in important areas such as investments, member services, advice, and insurance. Our objective is to inspire the industry to achieve greater heights!”
